F1 'doesn't need to heal' - world champion Max Verstappen speaks to BBC Sport's Natalie Pirks

After last year's controversial title decider, Max Verstappen says F1 doesn't need to heal.

There needs to be more teams fighting at the front.

The Red Bull driver took the drivers title after race director Michael Masi decided not to follow procedures around restarting the race.

He said in an interview that the Drive to Survive documentary was a fake and that he didn't want to take part.

The final race of last season in Abu Dhabi was won by Verstappen after Masi decided to restart the race early after a safety car.

Masi was removed from his position as race director because he failed to apply the rules correctly.

There are dramatic moments which are part of the sport as well, Verstappen said.

F1 is a very tough world. If you already have seven titles, Lewis can feel less pain.

The Dutchman said that Formula 1 needs more teams at the front fighting for wins.

The new season, which begins in the Kingdom of Bahrain this weekend, will see new car and tire designs that will allow drivers to follow each other more closely on the track.

Hopefully the new regulations will give us that boost and we have more drivers on every team fighting. At the end of the day, this is what we like.

'Faking rivalries'

F1 has seen a boost in its profile due to the new rules, the controversial final race, and the popularity of Drive to Survive, a series about teams up and down the pitlane.

Verstappen is one of the key figures who have refused to take part.

I didn't like the two episodes I watched. faking rivalries is not my thing.

Part of the new series focuses on the struggles of McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo as he watches British team-mate Lando Norris thrive in a car he cannot get up to speed.

Lando and Daniel are two great people and they have great characters, but at the second episode it looks like they are not very friendly to each other.

Although the series has been credited with boosting the sport's popularity, Verstappen believes its approach doesn't reflect what unfolds.

It helps to bring in an audience at one point, but that effect runs out. I think we are past that stage now and it is more like a reality show.

It takes way too much time. I need to focus on the racing and not spend another half an hour at the race weekend when they need to talk to you.

After signing a long-term contract with Red Bull, Verstappen said he was very happy and that he and the team shared the same mentality.

The 20-time race winner sympathizes with Nikita Mazepin, who was recently sacked by the Russian driver after his contract with the American team was terminated.

Everyone, regardless of background, work very hard from a very young age to be a Formula 1 driver, and you always have to feel sympathy for Nikita himself.

You can have backing, but you still need talent to drive these cars in Formula 3 and Formula 2. You need to be competitive.

It is very complicated for him, but hopefully the world can be at peace again.
