Hundreds of New Yorkers lined up past the block last weekend to get their hands on pepper spray.

The founder of Soar Over Hate, a New York City-based nonprofit dedicated to fighting anti-Asian hate, posted a video of the organization giving away pepper spray. The video shows hundreds of people waiting in a line that wrapped past the block.

I hope this shows the daily fears that many are experiencing.

Less than a week ago, a man in New York punched an elderly woman over 125 times. A hate crime and attempted murder charges have been filed against a woman. The victim had injuries to his head and face.

The wife of a former presidential candidate posted a video about the long line and said it was the clearest sign people were living in fear.

Pepper spray is illegal to buy in NY, so a group of people worked with a pepper spray company to organize a giveaway in Chinatown yesterday. This was the result. It says everything about how the #AAPI community is feeling right now. https://t.co/3rv3zUDjvK

In the state of New York, buying pepper spray is not allowed. Pepper spray can't be shipped, mailed or ordered in New York. Each resident must be at least 18 years of age and only two pocket-sized canisters can be purchased per transaction.

Many Asian Americans and Asian American women are living in fear, even though it is not always clear whether an attack is racially motivated. The video of the long line for pepper spray reflects the angst many are experiencing in present times, when anti-Asian hate crimes continue to make headlines.
