A group of international Chinese students from Cornell University staged a walk out and booed an Uyghur student during a public service career talk last week.

The students of Cornell University's Master in Public Administration program walked out of a weekly speaker series after a lecture by a Fulbright scholar.

The guest speaker, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), was asked why the U.S. and the international community were silent on the issue of the alleged genocide of the Uyghurs in China.

What I am experiencing at @CornellBPP since last Thursday only gives me more courage to speak up.

I feel unjust, and unsupported for the truth that I am standing for, for my brother and for Uyghurs at large.

The Chinese government cracked down on the Uyghurs in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, arresting many of them. The student said that she has not been able to speak to her brother since he was taken into custody.

Around 40 Chinese students walked out of the event when Slotkin tried to respond, prompting a university staff member to inform the Democrat representative who joined the event via a video link.

Slotkin said that he was sorry that the students just felt the need to leave.

There was audible booing and jeering from the Chinese students when she asked the question, and during the answer, they started to get up and walk out of the room.

An email was sent to Cornell Institute of Public Affairs faculty members explaining that the walk out was due to the extremely hostile environment the Chinese attendees were put in.

The human rights abuses of the Uyghur people are valuable points of discussion and critical to promoting open dialogue according to Professor Matt Hall. We must also respect the fact that walkouts are a legitimate form of protest and an appropriate expression of disapproval.

The Independent was told that the walkout brought about a dehumanizing experience. She claimed that Hall was trying to shift the focus of what happened. They have denied my existence.

The signal they gave me was that my people were suffering genocide at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. They are telling me that you have to be quiet. This stress and worry has accumulated for a long time.

The events that transpired last week stirred divisive discourse and engaged us in serious conversation about how best to speak up, according to an email from Hall and the Dean of the Cornell school.

They remind us how harmful it is when a conversation becomes derogatory anti-Asian.

She wants Cornell University to publicly apologize for their unsatisfactory response to the incident.

Are you talking about anti-Asian? What are you talking about? I'm Asian too. There is very little knowledge of what I am going through. She said that she felt alone.

A vocal critic of the Chinese government since her brother was imprisoned, NurMuhammad obtained New Zealand citizenship after moving there. She moved to the U.S. in 2021.
