Trader Joe's has been ranked number one in customer preference for two years in a row. Why is it so easy to spend money there? The answer is a bit deeper than you might think.

INSIDERINSIDER
  • I worked at Trader Joe's for three years, and I was annoyed by some things shoppers did.

  • It makes the employees jobs harder if you don't throw your trash out or put your cart back.

  • It is not worth complaining about the free samples, the parking lots or the long lines.

I worked at Trader Joe's for three years and learned a lot about the people who shop there.

I wish shoppers would stop doing things at Trader Joe's.

Don't try to barter prices with people who have no power over them

The chain tries to source the best ingredients for its products, which can raise the costs.

Don't badger the store employees about the prices because they don't control them.

You're not going to love every free sample, but don't complain about them

All the products at the demo station are given away when Trader Joe's gives out samples.

You don't have to buy the product if it doesn't meet your expectations. The employees are not able to control your taste preferences.

It's much more helpful if you throw away your trash

It is important to pick up your trash wherever you are.

Leaving empty cups and open packages is a problem for employees.

Don't blame the employees for the store's small parking lot

Trader Joe's parking lots can be small. The employees cannot fix this.

You can avoid a crowded parking lot if you come soon after opening.

Forgetting to put your cart back makes everyone's job harder

Leaving carts all over is a hassle and takes up a lot of space.

The employees keep the space neat and safe for everyone and there are designated areas where you can return your cart.

If you need help with something, please ask nicely

TJ's employees are usually more than happy to help if you need help bagging or finding an item.

They deserve basic respect. Customers will ask for things instead of asking kindly.

The cashiers are trying to keep the line moving, so be patient

People don't like a long line. TJ's cashiers do their best to assist customers in a timely fashion.

Complaining or making rude comments about the lines doesn't do anything.

If you have a big shopping list, don't come right before closing

If you have a huge list, try to come in at least an hour before closing.

The night crew working the last shift has to stay until every customer leaves, so coming in 10 minutes before closing can cause them to stay longer than they are supposed to.

If Trader Joe's has discontinued a product, there's no use arguing about it

Trader Joe's employees have access to a database that tells them if a product is out of stock or not.

An employee can check if a product is available at a nearby store when a store is out of a product. It's a good idea to call ahead of time to see if a specific product is available.

There is nothing they can do when an employee tells you a product has been discontinued.

The employees aren't forced to be happy, so don't treat them like robots

TJ's employees don't have to always be smiling. The employees enjoy working in most stores.

There is no need to point out that someone is not being nice.
