Steinbrenner not feeling pressure to spend like the Mets (0:42)

Hal Steinbrenner, the owner of the Yankees, says he won't spend money to keep up with the Mets because he is excited to have two competitive teams in New York. (0:42)

Hal Steinbrenner, the managing general partner of the Yankees, says he won't spend money to keep up with his cross despite pressure from fans.

Steinbrenner said that he could not control what the other owners did with the resources. Every year, my family and I make the same commitment, which is to do everything we can to field a championship-caliber team and win a World Series. I will continue to try and do that.

Steinbrenner and Cohen have had a few lunches, but they don't know each other well.

Steinbrenner said it was great for the fans of New York to have two competitive baseball teams. I think it will make the summer a lot of fun.

The re-signing of Anthony Rizzo and the trades for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson likely took the Yankees out of the race for Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman and others. The Mets are projected to have a luxury tax payroll of $255 million, making them the only team with a higher payroll.

The decision not to go after higher-priced free agents was not influenced by the luxury tax.

Steinbrenner said that he was excited to give a chance to Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. The last couple years have been difficult for us. There are other factors that have to do with individual players.

Steinbrenner said that the current payroll situation would not affect the ability to sign Judge to a contract extension.

Steinbrenner said that they would be having conversations in the weeks to come, and that Judge was a great Yankee. My order to Brian Cashman was to focus on the needs of the year. We need to focus on the needs and what we need to bring in to make this team better.
