The Washington Commanders release of defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis freed up necessary salary-cap room but angered his representatives, who said they were lied to about his status last month.
Alan Herman said that Rob Rogers, the Washington senior vice president of football administration, told him that the team wouldn't be releasing him.
Herman told The Associated Press that they don't care to be lied to.
Washington released guard Ereck Flowers and safety Deshazor Everett as part of a series of moves that created $18.9 million of cap space.
According to a source, the Commanders tried to trade Ioannidis in the past week, but they were unsuccessful.
Herman was surprised by the move.
It would take you by surprise if someone told you two weeks ago that he was solid as a rock. General manager Martin Mayhew apologized. This is the first time I have ever had a situation like this with Rob. Always professional.
According to multiple sources, Washington changed their plans last week after acquiring quarterback Carson Wentz and his $28 million cap hit for this season. One source said that they were told that Ioannidis was safe.
It takes our player out of the market for three days, and that is troubling.
Within the first hour after his release, Herman said five teams had called.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Commanders were releasing safety Landon Collins. Washington will save $12 million against the salary cap this year, but won't realize it until June 1, because Collins was designated a post-June 1 release.
The team had about $5 million in cap space prior to the releases after acquiring Wentz. Some of the moves would have been made anyway.
Washington lost more depth along the defensive front by cutting Ioannidis. Tim Settle will sign a two-year deal with Buffalo on Wednesday.
Washington made a last-second effort to keep Settle, but could not match a deal that averages up to $4.5 million per year.
The Commanders have four first-round picks starting along the front with tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne and ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young.
In 73 games with Washington, the fifth-round draft pick recorded 24.5 sacks. There were 16 of them in the last year. He missed 13 games in 2020 and had 2.5 sacks in 16 games.
Washington swapped seventh-round picks with Miami for Flowers. They started 16 games. He moved from tackle to guard for Washington in 2019. He signed a three-year deal with Miami.
Brandon Scherff is going to sign a three-year deal with Jacksonville.
The car accident that killed his girlfriend happened in December. The man has been charged with manslaughter. According to the sheriff's department in Virginia, an investigation found that he was driving twice the legal limit when he crashed.
