According to sources, the TennesseeTitans plan to release receiver Julio Jones.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network says that this transaction will be after June 1. Spotrac says that the delay will save the team $9 million against the salary cap in 2022, and spread his dead cap across the next two seasons.

The Atlanta Falcons traded Jones to the Tennessee Volunteers. The same issue limited Jones to just 10 games in 2020 with the Falcons.

It has led to a steep drop for a player who has been to the Pro Bowl six times in the last four years. He has been named first- or second-team All-Pro five times in his career.

Jones has 91.9 receiving yards per game, which is the most in NFL history.

When they traded for Jones and a sixth-round pick last year, they thought they would get a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick. He signed a three-year extension with the Falcons that made him the highest-paid receiver in the league.

The position behind Pro Bowler A.J. Brown is limited. With Chester Rogers and Marcus Johnson free agents, the only other returning receiver with more than 100 receiving yards last year was Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.

Without Jones, the team still excelled, finishing with a 12-5 record and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

The organization can add more pieces to get over the top in the playoffs.
