Susan Lund vanished on Christmas Eve in 1987 as she walked from her home to the grocery store.

About 180 miles from Montgomery County, law enforcement in southern Illinois discovered human remains one month later.

Last week, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office announced that the remains discovered in 1993 were of Lund.

The first case update in decades occurred thanks to a team of experts that examined a decapitated head found in the state park.

The husband of Susan Lund died after she went missing. He was stationed there. Campbell reported his wife missing.

The couple met in high school and had three children. Local reporters documented that Lund was pregnant when she vanished.

A multi-agency search was conducted for several months, but the official missing persons case was closed.

The woman was estimated to be between 30 and 50 years of age, and may have had torticollis or wry neck syndrome, a condition that may have caused her head to have a sideways tilt.

Forensic methods updated and refined

Years passed.

Amy Michael, an assistant professor of Anthropology at the University of New Hampshire, offered to reexamine the case using updated forensic methods, according to a news release from Redgrave.

As forensic methods are updated and refined, it is critical to reexamine cold cases and utilize new approaches, like forensic genetic genealogy.

Laurah and Michael collaborated. The woman probably did not appear asymmetrical during her life. A new forensic image was created.

The remains of Ina Jane Doe were sent to a forensic laboratory in California to be tested for genetic genealogy. Redgrave, a genealogy company located in Massachusetts, received the DNA profile. The data file for the profile was uploaded to GEDmatch.

The release said that Redgrave's genealogy team had a potential match within a day. Lund's family members reached out to law enforcement who forwarded the potential ID.

A sibling provided a sample of their own saliva to be compared to Ina Jane Doe.

Scott Beaubien, an agency spokesman, said that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will lead the investigation due to the remains being located in Illinois.
