J.D. McKissic will return to the Washington Commanders after changing his mind about playing for the Buffalo Bills.
According to agents Doug Hendrickson andCJ LaBoy, Washington initially didn't offer a deal, until he agreed to one with Buffalo on Tuesday. Washington was willing to match the offer, but McKissic did not want to leave, the agents said.
According to sources, McKissic will return to Washington on a two-year deal worth up to $7 million.
He is a key player in Washington's offense as a third-down back. He was on injured reserve for the last three games of the season because of a neck injury. In two seasons with Washington, McKissic has caught 123 passes and averaged 8.0 yards per reception. He is considered a strong blocker in protection and also a pass-catcher. He can run routes other running backs struggle with, such as out-and-ups, and that adds flexibility to Washington's offense.
He is a popular player in the locker room due to his high energy and personality. Washington still has Antonio Gibson as its primary back, but it could add another back in the draft.
A pass-catching running back who would have been a great asset to their offense is taken away by not bringing in McKissic. Buffalo does not have a player on the roster who can consistently catch passes from Josh Allen. The only running backs under contract are Singletary and Moss.
Adding players like McKissic who can make plays downfield would make sense for this offense. Former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen are potential replacements for Christian McCaffrey, who is likely unavailable by trade. The Bills have nine picks in the draft, so it could be a good fit. The team invested third-round picks in running backs.
