J.D. McKissic initially agreed to a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills, but is now returning to the Washington Commanders.

The same deal he previously agreed to with Buffalo was the reason why McKissic accepted the two-year, $7 million offer to remain with the Commanders.

The agents for McKissic said Washington did not offer him a contract until he accepted Buffalo's offer Tuesday, according to the report. He didn't want to leave after the Commanders offered him the same deal.

After spending time with the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks, the 28-year-old McKissic joined the Washington Wizards.

He had a career year in 2020 when he set career highs in rushing, receiving, and total yards from scrimmage.

As part of a Washington offense that received inconsistent quarterback play, McKissic was one of the most consistent producers.

The Washington team went just 7-9 but still won theNFC East and advanced to the playoffs, where it lost to the Buccaneers.

The fact that he missed six games with a concussion and neck injury was a factor in the fact that his numbers weren't as good last season.

McKissic was an offensive threat once again, finishing with 397 yards and two additional scores on 43 catches, as well as 212 yards and two touchdown on the ground.

He will retain his role as the No. 2 running back behind Antonio Gibson and the top option on third downs and in obvious passing situations.

He will be a safety valve for the new quarterback, who the Commanders acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts.

Josh Allen is one of the leading candidates for the league's most valuable player award.

He would have played second fiddle to Singletary in the passing game, earning plenty of third-down looks and targets.

The Bills are going back to the drawing board to find a complement for Singletary. There are many options for running backs in the free-agent class, which includes Leonard Fournette, Melvin Gordon III, Cordarrelle Patterson, SonyMichel, Ronald Jones II, and many others.
