According to a league source, the Las Vegas Raiders are releasing defensive end Carl Nassib.

Nassib made headlines when he said he was gay. He was the first openly gay player to play in the NFL. He said that the reaction to his announcement was incredible.

The Raiders made a $100,000 donation to TheTrevor Project, a suicide prevention charity. When Nassib made his announcement, the Raiders donation matched the contribution he made.

At the time of Nassib's announcement in June, Raiders owner Mark Davis said it would be 2021. Carl has more power. It does not change my opinion of him as a person or as a Raider.

The release of Nassib will give the Raiders a salary-cap savings of $8 million, but there will be a $6.6 million dead-money hit. The Raiders will get another $11.75 million in cap savings when Las Vegas releases LB Cory Littleton after June 1.

Nassib signed a three-year, $25.25 million free-agent deal with the Raiders in March 2020. He started five of 27 games for Las Vegas and had four sacks and an intercept.

He had 21 tackles with 1.5 sacks in 13 games last season, including a game-changing strip sack of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in overtime of the season opener.

My body felt like jello after being out for a couple of days. Nassib said in training camp that he was very anxious. I feel better. I feel better than I did the day before. I am looking forward to the future.

I was surprised by the reaction. It was amazing. I thought no one would care. It was great to have that support. I was happy to help bring visibility and representation to my community.

Nassib was a third-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2016 and spent the last two seasons with the Buccaneers. He has 22 career sacks, 4 forced turnovers and 16 passes defended.

The release of Nick Kwiatkoski was announced by the Raiders.

A three-year, $21 million free-agent contract with $13.75 million guaranteed for the Raiders was signed by Kwiatkoski, who turns 29 in May. He started all 12 of the Las Vegas games in which he appeared in in 2020 and only played in eight games last season. Injuries, ineffectiveness, and the arrival of a new player made a Raiders career shortened for Kwiatkoski.

He had two forced turnovers and a sack for the Raiders.
