The company announced on Wednesday that it is launching a new feature called "Custom Landmarkers" that allows creators to build unique augmented reality experiences for local places they care about. The feature can be used to create landmarkers for things like statues and storefronts in local communities.
The new feature was teased at the Lens Fest event in December. The new landmarkers can be found through physical snaps at the landmark or on a Lens creator's profile.
The launch of the app is part of the company's efforts to continually improve its platform and enable its community of 250,000 creators to build new experiences that enhance the way users learn and explore.
The company said in a statement that they started with templates of 30 beloved sites around the world. Today, we are launching custom landmarks in lens studio, which will allow creators to anchor their stories to local places they care about.
The image is called snap.
Early access to the custom landmarkers and the launch of augmented reality experiences in their communities were given to the lens creators who are part of the lens network. In New York City, creator QReal has turned the storefront of the city's first independent bookshop into a paper pop-up book. A new song called "Sweetest Pie" is featured in an augmented reality canvas created by BLNK in Los Angeles.
The company wants to make sure that the experiences built by creators support the well-being of its users. The platform will moderate the content to achieve this. The moderation teams approve all Lenses before they are publicly accessible.
The company announced at its event that 2.5 million lens creators from more than 200 countries have made 2.5 million lens that have been viewed more than 3.5 trillion times. The TikTok clone Spotlight gave 12,000 creators a total of $250 million for their posts. More than 70% of Spotlight submissions use one of the creative tools on the platform, according to the company.
