Nine people, including six New Mexico university students and a coach returning from a golf tournament, have died in a fiery head-on collision in West Texas.

The University of the Southwest students from Portugal and Mexico were killed in the crash. Two Canadian students were hospitalized.

A pickup truck crossed the center line of a two-lane road and crashed into a van carrying members of the university's men's and women's golf teams.

The state agency later identified the deceased as: golf coach Tyler James, 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico; and players Mauricio Sanchez, 19, of Mexico; and Karisa Raines, 21, of Fort Stockton, Texas.

Henrich Siemans, 38, of Texas, and an unidentified 13-year-old boy were killed in a crash.

Two Canadian students were critically injured in the van. The University Medical Center in Lubbock is about 120 miles to the northeast.

Drew said their parents were on the plane headed to Texas.

Hockey was a big part of his life, but his true passion is golf.

The Mexican Federation of Golf posted a note of sympathy to the loved ones of Mauricio.

Stone's mother wrote about her loss on Facebook.

"She has been an absolute ray of sunshine during this short time on earth, and we just don't understand how this happened to our amazing, beautiful, smart person."

Stone played sports at Nocona High School, where she graduated in 2021. According to her biography on the golf team website, she was a freshman majoring in global business management.

June James didn't know much about the circumstances of the collision. The men and women were coached by him.

We don't know what happened. It is a huge investigation. James said during a brief phone interview that they don't have any idea.

At the last minute, a team member decided to visit her parents in Houston instead of playing.

The whole team is gone or in the hospital.

Eric Weiss, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said that an investigative team was going to the crash site Wednesday.

The golf team was traveling in a van that was towing a box trailer when it collided with a truck and both vehicles burst into flames. The speed limit on the two-lane asphalt highway where they collided is 75 mph, but investigators have not yet determined how fast either vehicle was traveling.

The University of the Southwest is located in New Mexico near the Texas state line.

There is a memorial at the course where the team practices. There was a sign with a cross and the initials USW.

Rockwind Community Links Manager Ben Kirkes said it was the least they could do for the players and James.

Kirkes said that the kids were great kids and great community members.

New Mexico Gov. Lujan Grisham said on Facebook that she was deeply sad by the loss of life.

This is a terrible accident. As we await additional information from authorities, my prayers are with the community and the loved ones of all those involved.

Texas Gov. Abbott expressed his sympathies.

We grieve with the loved ones of the individuals whose lives were taken too soon in this fatal vehicle crash, Abbott said.

The teams were playing in a golf tournament at a college in the west of the state.

We are still learning the details about the accident, but we are devastated and sad to learn of the deaths of our students and their coach.

Counseling and religious services will be available on the campus.

The play would be canceled because of the crash. The schools were participating in the event.

All of the players and their coaches from the participating schools met together early this morning.
