Alex Ovechkin passed Jaromir Jagr for third place on the NHL goal- scoring list with his career goal against the New York Islanders.
With 4:58 left in the third period, the Caps center won a faceoff in the Islanders zone to the top of the right circle, where he passed the puck to Alex Ovechkin. He snapped the puck over the glove of the Islanders goalie for his 37th goal of the season.
He twirled his stick back into the neutral zone. The bench emptied as the teammates surrounded the captain in a huddle, jumping up and down to celebrate. The fans who stood to cheer for him were saluted by Ovechkin.
This means a lot. My family is watching this organization in Russia. I am very excited. Very happy. It is nice to be the top player from Europe. It is a proud moment for all of us. Great for hockey.
This was the 1,252nd career game for Oviechkin.
He has done phenomenal things for his career. It is fun to watch, he is our captain and hopefully he can keep it.
Wayne Gretzky had an NHL goals record of 894 in 1,487 games. Next up for Howe is his 1,767 career games.
Jagr scored 766 goals in 24 NHL seasons. He played in the Kontinental Hockey League for three seasons. He last played in the NHL with the Flames.
Jagr is a hockey player and also owns a team in the Czech Extraliga. He was quick to congratulate Ovi on his social media post from the NHL, but he kept his message open-ended.
Jagr said in the video that he might come back to the NHL and start chasing you.
On March 8th, Ovi tied Jagr on the all-time list with two goals against the Flames. Barry Trotz was the coach of the Stanley Cup winning Caps.
Ovi is up for another milestone every time we play the Caps. I wish him all the best, but just not tonight, because I think he will break the record, said Trotz before the game.
Trotz said that Ovi digs in when you doubt him. You would think he would break somewhere along the line. He would say that the Russian Machine never stops.
