Kevin Holland says he helped catch the man who shot a gun at a restaurant.
Holland said he heard a loud bang while eating sushi with Patrick Robinson and saw people running away in fear. Holland said he and Robinson saw another man try to wrestle the gun away from the shooter, so they approached to help disarm the man and detain him until police arrived.
Holland said he wouldn't tell the next person to do it unless they were trained for that situation. That was the best way for me to defend myself. I like Batman.
The Houston Police Department does not release the names of witnesses, so police could not confirm Holland's involvement, according to a spokesman. The police have described what Holland's account is like.
The suspect fired a gun into the air at the restaurant inside the Highland Village shopping center. Monday. After the shot went off, the person sitting next to the man in the restaurant grabbed his hand, pointed the gun at him, and attempted to subdue him.
Police have identified the suspected shooter as Jesus Samaniego. He is accused of carrying a weapon and deadly conduct.
Holland saw people running away after he heard a shot.
Holland thought it was a champagne bottle popping because the people behind him were having a birthday party. I see people running like they are going to die, and I think they are super worried.
Holland said he and Robinson got low and looked in the direction of the shot. Holland said he saw a man grab his arm. Holland said the gun was facing toward him and other patrons. Holland said he and Robinson went around the other side rather than running away. Holland said he picked up a chair to hit the shooter, but couldn't tell who he was because they were wrestling on the ground.
Holland noticed that the man holding the gun was on the bottom of the skirmish. He said he and Robinson were able to get the gun out of his hand. Holland put the man in a rear-naked choke submission hold and wrapped his legs around his legs.
Holland said he let go of the choke, slid out on top, and stretched his arms out so he couldn't reach for anything.
Holland said he and Robinson grabbed the man's backpack and threw it to the side to make sure the gun was not in reach. He said that the police arrived soon after.
Robinson told ABC 13 in Houston that it's crazy that nobody got hurt, even though you see it on the news or on TV.
Holland said he was always told to leave the knife in the attacker's possession. Go towards the gun if the attacker has a gun. He said he has been training in martial arts for most of his life, so he wouldn't recommend most people to do that.
Holland said it seemed like the safer route to go to it instead of going away from it.
Holland is familiar with these types of situations. Two days after a UFC fight, a Texas resident helped detain a suspected robber after chasing down his vehicle. Holland is not sure how these circumstances keep happening to him.
He said that he would like to end up in less situations. I was talking to my people about that. I am always into B.S., you know what I mean?
Holland, a popular UFC fighter, made his debut in the UFC at UFC 272 on March 5 in Las Vegas. He has five UFC wins in a single calendar year in 2020, tying the record, and he has just two losses in his past nine fights.
