Manchester United have not won a trophy in 40 years, after being knocked out of the playoffs.

The League Cup final is due to take place on February 26, 2023, and the earliest United can achieve silverware is by winning it.

The last time United won a trophy, they were four decades ago. After winning the 1977 FA Cup, they had to wait until 1983 to win again.

The win rate of 45 per cent is the lowest since 1989-90.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United have only lifted three pieces of silverware. The FA Cup was won by Louis van Gaal in 2016 and the League Cup was won by Jose Mourinho the following year.

The arrivals of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho last summer were seen as a serious threat to United's title hopes, but they fell behind rivals Manchester City andLiverpool in the league and now face an uphill struggle to finish in the top four.

In a campaign that has seen former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job as manager and interim boss, United crashed out of both domestic cup competitions with home losses to West Ham in September and Middlesbrough last month.

Their trophyless streak is extended into a sixth consecutive season after they were beaten in the last 16 of the European Championship.

April 22, 2013). Manchester United won the league.

Sir Alex Ferguson's United never went more than three seasons without winning the title. The current run of nine years after his retirement is a catastrophe for those who grew up knowing nothing else but success under the Scot.

That is exactly what it is for a club and institution of that size. In nine seasons, United have lifted just three major trophies.

When he took over at United, he was tasked with restoring the club to its former glory, but a penalty shootout loss to Villarreal in last season's Europa League final was the closest he came.

The FA Cup defeat by Middlesbrough ended United's best chance of winning silverware in what has been a disastrous campaign.

It has been half a decade since United last won a trophy.

It took 30 years for them to win a top-flight title. If United fall short in the league next season, it will be 10 and it might be a stretch to suggest they are on the same path.

United's barren streak looks set to continue for a while yet.
