Daniel Jones is still the starting quarterback for the New York Giants, but he will reportedly have an experienced backup behind him during the 2022 campaign.
On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Tyrod Taylor is expected to be a high-level backup to Jones.
The deal is expected to be for two years and $11 million with incentives that can make it worth up to $17 million.
The Giants have a new head coach and general manager. The roster is going to be different in the next few years, and it wouldn't be a surprise if star running back Saquon Barkley was included in trade discussions.
Jones' up-and-down start to his career will be part of the evaluation.
He threw for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdown in his first year as a quarterback. He had just 11 touchdown throws to 10 picks in his second and third seasons.
If Jones struggles early in the future, Taylor can come in and turn things around.
The Pro Bowler has played for six different teams. He played in six games for the Texans last year and started six of them, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 962 yards and five touchdown, with five interceptions, and adding 151 yards and three scores on the ground.
Even if he isn't playing, Taylor can be a leader even if he isn't playing.
He will be the backup, but he could become the starter.
