The domestic travel experience is similar to how it was before the recession. Hot meals are being restored in first class on most routes.
I flew Delta first class from Boston to Tampa and wanted to share my impressions of the new hot meals.
I was on a Delta flight from Boston to Tampa that had a flight time of just under three hours. Delta's first class is a lot to be desired in terms of comfort. The planes could use a refresh.
Drinks were served in proper glassware after takeoff.
When dinner orders were taken, there were three choices; beef short ribs, chicken with vegetables, or pasta in a creamy sauce.
I ordered the beef short ribs, which came with a side of potato gratin and broccolini.
The chicken came with asparagus, sweet potato and tomatoes.
Both dishes were served with a salad and dessert.
There are a few random thoughts about these meals.
I am impressed that there were three meal choices for a domestic flight, as you don't often get more than two options, unless it is a premium or long haul international route.
Delta is going to serve vegetarian meals in first class on more flights. While creamy pasta is vegetarian, I wish my flight had one of the new vegetarian dishes that should join the rotation soon, like an Impossible Burger, plant-based meatballs, etc.
The food was fine. I think it looked better than it tasted. I am probably in the minority, but I would like airlines to keep it simple. US airlines have limited budgets, so I wish they would work with simple ingredients and make it good, rather than trying to create dishes that people think are fancy.
Delta served a pre-packaged superfood bowl when it had limited service during the Pandemic. The dish on this flight was healthy, well executed, and simple, and I preferred it. Many people prefer warm comfort food. The only US product with consistently good hot food is JetBlue Mint. Other airlines could learn a thing or two.
Hot meal service in first class has been restored by Delta. I had my first meal with Delta yesterday. Most people would consider the meals to be quite good for a three hour flight, and I was impressed that there were three choices.
If you have a budget of a few dollars per person, I would rather have a salad than short ribs. That is just me.
What do you think about Delta's new first class food?
