In a move that clears $8.25 million against the salary cap, the Cleveland Browns have released center JC Tretter, who was reelected for a second term as president of the NFL Players Association.
Over the past five seasons, Tretter, despite nagging knee injuries, has started every game but one for the Browns. In each of the past two seasons, Cleveland has ranked among the league's top offensive lines.
To the entire organization and the city of Cleveland, thank you for a wonderful five years, said Tretter in a post on the social networking site. I will miss my teammates. I will be leaving Cleveland with amazing memories and friends that will last a long time. I wish you all the best.
During the two turbulent years that followed the COVID-19 epidemic, he played a major role in collaborating with the league on protocols to keep players safe.
For the past five seasons, JC has been a mainstay and iron man at center for us. His leadership within the locker room and the field will be missed. We wish him well as he continues his career.
The way for Nick Harris to take over as Cleveland's starting center has been cleared by the release of Tretter. Harris was drafted in the fifth round. He has started at guard in each of the past two seasons.
