The Broncos have agreed to terms with Randy Gregory, a stunning reversal of fortune.
The Dallas Cowboys announced on their social media accounts Tuesday morning that Gregory had agreed to a deal to return to the team, but multiple Broncos sources later confirmed that he was joining Denver. The deal is five years, $70 million, with $28 million of guarantees coming in the first two years.
A source told Ed Werder that the salary-forfeiture language the Cowboys include in player contracts that led Gregory to back out of his agreement is standard for them but not used by other teams. The Cowboys have high interest in Von Miller depending on his financial expectations, a source said.
The clause that Gregory objected to was not included in his previous Cowboys contract and was not mentioned in Monday's contract talks. The source told Werder that the clause is included in every Dallas player contract, but not the contract of the quarterback.
Before free agency opened, the Broncos had done extensive due diligence on Gregory and graded him as one of the top edge defenders available. The team had been trying to negotiate with Gregory's representatives.
A source told Jeremy Fowler that the Broncos agreed to re-sign Josey Jewell to a two-year, $11 million contract. Broncos general manager George Paton said at the NFL scouting combine that Jewell is completely recovered from the torn pectoral he suffered in Week 2 last season.
Bradley Chubb is the starting outside linebacker in the Broncos 3-4 defense. The Broncos are hoping that Gregory can continue his career resurgence.
Gregory has never started more than 11 games in a season and never finished with more than six sacks.
The Broncos have lured free agents who appeared to be headed elsewhere late in the process before. They finished the terms on a deal with the representatives of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders while he was at the Kansas City Chiefs complex.
The Broncos signed Ware, who had been released by the Cowboys, that year. Gregory wore the same number as Ware.
The Broncos have made two of the most significant moves in the league over the past two weeks.
After missing two full seasons and 14 games in another because of suspensions for multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy, Gregory became one of the Cowboys' best pass-rushers and was added to the players' leadership council by head coach Mike McCarthy in 2021.
Gregory missed time because of a calf strain and COVID-19 last season, but he made a career-high 11 starts.
