If the Jazz don't make the playoffs, there is a chance that Mitchell will leave Utah, but he is under contract through at least the 2024-25 season.

It is an open secret that the New York Knicks are targeting the All-Star guard.

Tensions have existed between Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. The two had a falling out at the beginning of the disease, which led to a report by The Athletic that their relationship was unsalvageable.

While the pair worked behind the scenes to repair their rift and responded with a sterling 2020-21 regular season, the Jazz once again struggled in the playoffs. The team has not made it past the second round of the playoffs with Mitchell and Gobert on the roster.

The relationship is reopening because of the mounting pressure of a deep playoff push. In January, Gobert seemingly threw Mitchell's defensive effort under the bus while praising other star guards around the league, a quote that clearly bothered Mitchell based on his social media activity and response afterwards.

Mitchell told reporters at the time that he thinks everyone in the group finds a way to hold each other accountable. We have to all find ways to get better at the end of the day. We all have our own ways of doing it, and he is one of them.

If Mitchell wants to win a championship in the long term, moving to New York would be hard. The Knicks had a one-season renaissance in 2020-21 before reverting back to their disappointing ways this season.

The only thing that ties Mitchell to the Knicks is his New York roots and his affiliation with the team's president, Leon Rose. Before joining the Knicks, Rose was an agent at the agency, but never represented Mitchell.

It will be more for personal reasons if the Knicks and Mitchell end up liking each other.
