The Green Bay Packers picked up salary-cap space when they came to an agreement on a new contract with Preston Smith.
Za'Darius Smith, the pass-rusher who signed in Green Bay in the same free-agent class as Preston Smith, saw his time with the Packers end on Monday. According to sources, the Packers are releasing him.
According to a source, Smith signed a four-year, $52.5 million extension, which had one year left on his existing deal. Smith will make $25 million over the next two seasons with the chance to make $32 million with incentives. Smith could earn up to $71 million over five seasons if he reaches all of the incentives.
The Packers have salary-cap space of $15.75 million.
This year's cap was expected to be $19.5 million. Smith's deal is expected to lower his cap charge by about $8-9 million, which is why the Packers were over their salary cap before. The Packers' cap number will be lowered by the contract extension of Rodgers.
Billy Turner is being released by the Packers, according to a source. If they designate him a post-June 1 release, they will save $3.142 million in cap space.
The cap must be met by 4 p.m. The league year begins Wednesday.
Za&Darius Smith missed most of the year because of a back injury, but he was still part of a strong pass-rushing duo. After taking a pay cut last year, he bounced back with nine sacks.
He has missed only one game in seven seasons. He signed a four-year deal with the Packers.
Za'Darius Smith, who was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons with the Packers, played only 18 snaps last year in the regular season. He underwent back surgery after the season opener. He did not return until the 49ers game.
He tried to get a contract extension with the Packers last year. He missed most of training camp because of a back injury.
The highest-priced free agent ever signed by the general manager was Za'Darius Smith, who got a four-year, $66 million deal. He had the most sacks in his first two seasons with the Packers. He was one of three players in the league with at least 12 sacks in each of the last two years.
The Packers have a $20.145 million franchise tag for receiver Davante Adams. The Packers and Adams don't want him to play under the tag. Adams would not have long-term security and the team would not be able to handle their cap. While there has been little progress in negotiations, Gutekunst said using the tag is more of a bridge to hopefully an extension down the road. The extension will be worked out on July 15.
