Almond Brewer was surrounded by police after a credit union manager doubted the authenticity of an account holder's check. A man in Black Arizona tried to cash a check after selling a boat. Almond Brewer went to the Pinal County Federal Credit Union in Apache Junction to cash a check but was surrounded by police after the manager doubted its authenticity. According to a local report from 12 News, the credit union manager called the police in October of 2021 when Brewer told them the personal check was fake. The teller looked kind of surprised when Brewer told her he had received the check after selling his boat. The check had red flags, like an old log of the credit union, as well as a checking account number that didn't match the member's information, according to the bank. The manager did not tell the police that the check was fake. When contacted by the credit union, the account holder verified she had signed the check, but police didn't learn about it until 10 minutes after their interaction with Brewer. Brewer told 12 News that the black guy had tattoos and hair. Why humiliate someone like that? He wondered why they felt less than a man. Amy Marshall, president and CEO of the Pinal County Federal Credit Union, said in a statement that the staff did not feel threatened or that Mr. Brewer was trying to rob the credit union. They had seen an increase in fraudulent activity and their ultimate responsibility is to ensure safe and secure accounts. She said that their team undergoes diversity and inclusion training. She apologized on behalf of the Pinal County Federal Credit Union. The situation is similar to that of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, who was handcuffed by police in Georgia while attempting to withdraw money from his checking account at a Bank of America branch.
