Republican Sen. Romney criticized former Democratic Rep. Gabbard for her comments about US biological laboratories in Ukraine.
Ulsi Gabbard is parroting false Russian propaganda. Romney said on Sunday that her lies may cost lives. A representative for Romney did not immediately respond to the question of what he was referring to.
In the video posted earlier in the day, Gabbard claimed that the US funded biolabs in Ukraine. She appeared on Tucker Carlson's show last week and said she was deeply concerned about the claims of bioweapons in Ukraine.
Russia has spread a baseless claim that the US is funding the development of bioweapons. The US warned that Russia could use chemical weapons in its invasion of Ukraine, while Russian and Chinese state media amplified the claims.
The New York Times reported that there are biological labs in Ukraine that are backed by the US in an effort to prevent bioweapons from being made or used.
The Washington Post reported that the labs are studying African swine fever, a disease that affects pigs rather than humans, in order to prevent it from spreading. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency authorized funding for the Ukraine labs, according to the Post.
Representatives for Gabbard did not respond to the request for comment.
Julia Davis of The Daily Beast reported that Russian TV played clips of Carlson and Gabbard. The Kremlin sent a memo to state media to feature Carlson because he criticizes the US and NATO, according to Mother Jones.
In response to her comments, Rep. Adam Kinzinger lashed out at her. It's very restrictive. Russia said the Georgian center was making zombies. Tulsi should go to Russia.
Representatives for Romney and Kinzinger did not reply to questions.
