According to sources, the Dallas Cowboys have finalized a five-year deal with wide receiver Michael Gallup.
The signing bonus is $10 million.
The Cowboys agreed to trade wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns a day earlier, according to sources. The deal cannot be announced until the start of the new league year on Wednesday. The deal has opened up $16 million in the salary cap room, which is more than the $20 million base salary that would have been guaranteed by March 20.
Gallup was set to hit the free-agent market next week, but decided to stay with the team that drafted him last year and rehabilitate with the athletic training staff he trusts after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January.
The expectation is that Gallup would be ready for game action in September after having surgery on his left knee in February.
He played in just nine games for the Cowboys in 2021 after suffering a calf strain in Week 1 and a knee injury in Week 17 of the previous year.
Gallup has 2,902 yards and 15 touchdown for his career. He finished the season with a career-high 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdown.
The Cowboys drafted Gallup in the third round of the year and immediately made him their best deep threat, as he averaged 15 yards per catch. He had missed two games in his career.
With the Cowboys moving on from Cooper, the Cowboys are banking on CeeDee Lamb and Gallup, once he is healthy, to step into larger roles on the offense.
Lamb was added to the Pro Bowl last season after he caught over one hundred passes for over one hundred yards and six touchdown. Cooper missed two games on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but still caught .
The Cowboys were able to keep Noah Brown on a one-year deal even though they are expected to lose Cedrick Wilson. The Cowboys could use more wide receiver help.
