Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that the New England Pats and veteran defensive back Devin McCourty have agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal.
In a video with his children, McCourty confirmed the news.
This signing doesn't come as a surprise after it was reported that the head coach of the team viewed him as an important team leader and that he wanted to return in 2022.
After being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft, New England chose to keep him, and he has played a significant role in the defense that includes Matthew Judon and Deatrich Wise Jr.
He is still competing at a high level despite his best seasons being behind him. In 17 games, he recorded three intercepts, 10 passes defended and 60 tackles.
With J.C. Jackson set to become a free agent, New England can turn its attention to him. Jackson emerged as one of the top defensive backs in 2020 and finished the season with eight picks, 23 passes defended, one forced fumble and 58 tackles to earn a Pro Bowl selection.
According to Jeremy Fowler and Evan Lazar, the Patriots need to upgrade their wide receiver and have been connected to several players, including DJ Chark Jr. Nelson Agholor would be an upgrade over any of those players.
In the wild-card round of the playoffs, the Pats lost to the Bills 47-17 and finished the season with a 10-7 record. With the team hoping to make a deeper run in 2022, there will be some interesting moves made over the coming weeks.
