William Hurt was born in Washington, D.C., on March 20, 1950, and began his career in stage productions. He was part of the acting group at the Circle Repertory Company from 1977 to 1989. He won the Obie Award for his debut appearance in My Life, and the Theatre Guild Award for his performances in Fifth of July, and Lulu.
Hurt's first major film role was in the science-fiction film Altered States in 1980. It was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Male.
In 1981 Hurt was catapulted to fame after his performance in Body Heat. In 1983, he appeared in The Big Chill and Gorky Park.
Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News, and A History of Violence all received Oscar nominations.
The Accidental Tourist (1988), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), The Village 2004, Syriana 2005, The Good Shepherd 2006 and Into the Wild 2007) are some of the films that Hurt produced.
Hurt was nominated for an award for Outstanding Supporting actor in a drama series for his role in Damages. He was nominated for an award for Outstanding Lead actor in a miniseries or movie for Too Big Too Fail.
In 2007, Hurt was announced to play General Thaddeus Ross in the film The Incredible Hulk, which introduced the actor to a whole new generation of fans. He reprised the role of Black Widow in the film.
