Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said on Sunday that a fourth dose of the vaccine will be needed to help keep hospitalizations manageable and sicknesses less severe.

It is necessary right now, a fourth booster. Bourla said that the protection that you are getting from the third is good enough for hospitalizations and deaths.

It isn't that good against infections, but doesn't last very long. He said that they were just submitting the data to the FDA and that they would see what the experts said outside Pfizer.

The FDA approved Pfizer's vaccine for people at least 16 years old. Emergency use authorization has been granted for a third dose of Pfizer's vaccine.

Bourla told CNBC that his company would be submitting data for a fourth dose of COVID-19.

He said while appearing on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that there is a need to boost the immune response.

The fourth dose of COVID-19 has begun to be recommended for high-risk groups.

Bourla was asked by Margaret Brennan if he would be able to avoid the confusion that came about when the third vaccine dose was being deployed.

I think so. He said that the CDC, FDA and the industry need to be well-coordinated so that they can provide a cohesive picture to the American people and the world.

Bourla reiterated his company's goal of creating a vaccine that would be effective against all versions of COVID-19 for longer periods of time.

We are working very hard to make a vaccine that will protect against all of the different types of omicron, but also something that can protect for at least a year.

  • There were 1,807 new local COVID-19 cases in China on Sunday, the highest daily figure in two years and more than triple the previous day. China has a lower case count than many other countries, but the growing number could complicate Beijing's ambition to suppress the spread of disease. The surge prompted health authorities to allow the public to buy rapid self-test kits for the first time to help detect infections quickly.
