With no end in sight to the global Semiconductor shortage, Ford will temporarily offer some Explorer SUVs without the electronics necessary to access the car's heating and air conditioning controls from the rear passenger seats. The move is an effort on the part of Ford to get those cars to customers faster, according to a Ford spokesman.

Ford will offer those SUVs at a discount, and they will still have functioning front-seat climate controls. The missing chips will be shipped to dealers by the end of the year, and owners of those models will need to bring their cars in for installation, according to reports.

Ford won't be the first company to ship a car without parts. Some Model 3 and Model Y buyers got their cars with missing ports. Some of BMW's vehicles, including the X5 and Z4 models, no longer have touchscreen controls.
