Futurism staff will be taking off early today to practice their kaiju-battling strategies, because apparently scientists have discovered two giant inside the Earth's crust. Pacific Rim was a movie in which giant alien monsters emerged from a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and crushed everything.

A study on the blobs was published in the journal Nature Geoscience, and it was found that one is under the Pacific Ocean while the other is under Africa. Earth has a thin outer crust, a thick mantle, a fluid outer core, and a solid inner core according to a new report. There are two massive blob-like structures in the mantle. The blobs are called Large Low-Shear-Velocity Provinces. They are 100 times taller than Mt. and are the size of a continent. They are not exactly the same.

The authors of the study wrote that the African anomaly may be less stable than the Pacific one.

Core of the Problem

The researchers think that the African anomaly may have been rising more recently than the Pacific Ocean blob. It may affect the Earth's topography, gravity, plate motion and even create or worsen volcanic activity.

The blobs don't necessarily mean something is wrong or that we're all in danger. Quite the opposite. The evolution of our planet and the history behind Earth's deepest layers may be highlighted by the understanding of these structures.

The work provides new insights on the nature of the Earth's largest structures in the deep interior and their interaction with the surrounding mantle.

We will be sure to report any alien activity if we hear about it.

Scientists may have found a new species on a ship.
