The American League implemented a full-time designated hitter rule in 1973, but the National League held out for nearly 50 years.

NL President Chub Feeney said back then that they would continue to play by baseball rules.

The rules have changed.

The designated hitter will be used by all 30 teams in the MLB in the upcoming season, eliminating pitchers from hitting and changing one of the longstanding quirks between the two leagues.

No more Madison Bumgarner taking big cuts, no more Max Scherzer trying to end his 0-for-62 slump.

The extra hitter will not be a new concept in the NL, as the league used the designated hitter in interleague games when visiting American League parks and in the playoffs. The reality is that almost every level of baseball uses the designated hitter.

The change is still significant, and it means that some parts of the game will almost certainly become extinct. It could add a boost of offense to a game that needs it. The batting average for MLB teams was.243 last season, which was the lowest mark since 1972, and pitchers combined to barely hit over. 100.

Some pitchers are upset that they don't get to swing a bat. Greinke was a pinch-hitter for Houston in last year's World Series.

The change was not expected to be a big adjustment, according to the infielder.

The National League side will benefit from having a pitcher in the nine-hole. I don't mind the man.

More jobs for the sport's 30-somethings, who might not be as fleet in the field but can still swing the bat at a high level, could be provided by the position of the designated hitter. Here are a few free agents who could benefit from having the designated hitter.

Nick Castellanos is one of the best all-around hitters in the game after batting.309 with 38 doubles and 34 homers in a 2021 All-Star campaign for the Cincinnati Reds. He is a little shaky defensively in the infield and outfielder, but he is still in his prime and should not slow down any time soon.

Kyle Schwarber said that the square-shaped masher has always been better in the batter's box than in the field. The 29-year-old is an on-base machine when he is healthy and he hit 32 homers last season. He doesn't have to spend a lot of time in the outfield, which is why a lot of teams would like that production.

The Atlanta Braves star is a solid first baseman, but he is not getting any younger. As he looks for a big contact in free agency, NL teams will be happy to know that he can stay in the lineup even if he slows down.

Nelson Cruz is proof that 40-somethings can still swing a bat. The 41-year-old has spent most of his career in the American League as a designated hitter. Now there are 15 more teams that would love to have him in the middle of the lineup. He has 449 career homers.

Good things can happen when Eddie Rosario swings the bat, he is just OK defensively and almost never walks. He was the NLCS Most Valuable Player after batting.560 with three homers against the Dodgers.
