Over the past six seasons of the hit STARZ drama series, actor Sam Heughan has become a household name for many, but also the object of affection across social media with his growing base of vocally loyal fans. The best news is that there is more to come for Heughan and Jamie Fraser.
Heughan tells me that the popularity is something they never thought could happen. We are going into season seven. It does not feel like it is waning. Every show has a heyday, but it definitely got a second life when it went onto the internet. I think people like the show, especially with Covid and lockdowns. People are asking, what can I watch now?
Heughan says that his character Jamie has had a lot of growth as well as his relationship with his co-star, Caitrzyna Balfe.
When I first started, I was pretty green, and I have been able to do other projects, but also create my own. I think it has given me and experience. It has been a long journey.
The second season of Heughan's reality series with his close friend Graham McTavish just finished filming and there is no official release date yet. Heughan told me that he just returned from New Zealand and was shooting all over it. We were looking at the culture of New Zealand, the Scottish heritage, and the connection with immigrants. We were looking at the food and drink and the activities you can do. It is an outdoors country with the wildlife. Lots of torturing Graham.
Heughan and his business partner Alexander Norouzi founded the company that is now called Sassenach Spirits back in 2020.
Heughan says that he is very, very happy about the consumer demand for Sassenach products. We started with a drink that was very successful. I have not just gone and bought a brand. It is all self-financed and I invested in it myself. We designed everything from the logo to the bottle. We did the Double Wood to promote unique spirits. It was a collaboration with an incredible spirits maker and I'm excited to see what else we can find.
With so many projects on Heughan's plate, I wondered if there were any other roles or industries that he had yet to take on.
Yes, yeah. Good question. I really enjoyed the process of creating Men In Kilts. We have been working on a few other projects, so I would like to do more. We have a couple of documentary ideas that we are working on. I would like to direct something. I have been working on a project for a long time. Should I direct it? I'm not sure. I think it's a good time for me to step aside and think of something else, because I think that's something that will happen once the show is over.
The world's latest digital currency trends like Bitcoin are not likely to be in Heughan's future. I don't like the impact of mining on the environment. I know money has no value and I think it's ridiculous. I don't like the way that it's generating. I know that it takes a lot of power and energy to create these coins. I've looked at it many times and whether I should invest. It can be a short-term thing. I don't think it's a stable investment, but you can make some money on it.
Heughan's My Peak Challenge mission is one place you can bank on him investing his time and energy in. In 2015, Heughan created a challenge for his fans to raise funds for charity, and now the community has grown into a full-fledged global community that gives its members the tools to achieve improved health, wellbeing, and peace of mind.
Heughan says that it was something he wanted to create because of his love of the outdoors and fitness. I'm inspired every time I go on it because they share their stories and achievements. It's really inspiring.
Heughan wrapped up our conversation by talking about how the power of social media today plays a major role in the phenomenon, as well as the importance of the fans of the show.
Heughan says that the support of the fans has been crucial. When we started the show, I think, myself and Caitríona, both, were very active on social media. I think fans would like to have access to the actors and feel a part of it. I feel like our fans are on this journey with us.
