American journalist killed in Ukraine 'paid his life' for covering war, Kyiv police chief says

The police chief of Irpen wrote on Facebook that a 51-year-old world- renowned media correspondent was shot in the city. They are trying to get the victim out of the war zone.

The journalist who died was identified by a social media post. The post shared images of a passport and a press pass.

The deputy managing editor of The New York Times said on Sunday that he was not on duty for the newspaper while he was in Ukraine.

The Times is sad to hear of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, but he was not on assignment.

A statement from The Times said that he was wearing a Times press badge that had been issued many years ago.

Irpen has been hit hard by the conflict.

Irpen and its surroundings villages are seeing an absolute humanitarian disaster. The former mayor of the city said that the Russian soldiers wouldn't let residents leave their homes. Russian forces shot at homes and hospitals, according to the former mayor.
