A Montgomery County judge sentenced a local man to life in prison for the murder of his wife.

Houbbadi was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of a crime, and especially aggravated robbery in connection with Chanane's death by a Montgomery County jury in January.

She was found dead in a neighbor's driveway. She had stab wounds to her back and chest. Houbbadi was found face down in the home with a number of self- inflicted wounds, including a slit to the wrist and neck, officials said.

The motive behind Chanane's death was not discussed before Friday's sentencing.

Houbbadi: Stolen money, eviction and divorce

Houbbadi wiped away tears as he told the court why he killed his wife.

She stole thousands of dollars from him before he called the police, he said. He was evicted from his home. He was staying with a friend in Franklin, Tennessee, because Chanane had filed an order of protection against him.

Chanane lived in a Nashville domestic violence shelter.

On the night of Chanane's murder, Houbbadi drove to Clarksville to pick up a prescription from Walmart. He went to the house to get some money because his credit card was expired. He was supposed to be at the home on the order of protection.

He saw a contact number for an attorney in a magazine while he was in the house.

Chanane wanted a divorce.

Houbbadi said that he lost it.

He apologized for what he did and said he had lost his money. He said as he cried that he wished he never went to his house.

Attorney Charles Bloodworth said that Houbbadi had a clean record and had sponsored Chanane to come to America, and that he had done everything right up until the night of the murder.

She has taken his money, he has been evicted from his house, and she is seeing a lawyer about getting a divorce. If he could take it back, what you heard today was sincere remorse.

Bloodworth said that Houbbadi wasn't thinking clearly because he was under provocation.

General District Attorney Robert Nash said that the lack of criminal history did not matter. Chanane was stabbed nine times.

Nash said it was egregious to go through these lengths to commit the murder.

The power to the home was cut off for about 20 minutes after Houbbadi arrived.

Nash said during the January trial that the house had no lights when Chanane came home. He told the judge that the back to back sentence was justified because of Houbbadi's violent past.
