The story of one woman compelled them all to act. Three black women have used social media to help minorities who are trying to flee besieged Ukraine, but are stuck there because of racism. Korrine Sky's journey out of Ukranian was chronicled on her account on the social networking site, and it caught the attention of two women in London. The trio contacted each other on the social networking site and that connection led to a campaign on the website GoFundMe which has raised over 139,000 dollars to help get Black people out of Ukraine. Sky News reported that 500 Black students have been helped by the money that the women are using to help pay for transportation out of the country. The women use Telegram to connect with Africans in Ukraine, according to ABC News. The police were discriminating against black and brown people as soon as they found out. The 29-year-old London-based lawyer told ABC News that they started an organization to support the individuals so they wouldn't be prosecuted. She told Sky News that she had been in contact with students who had been victims of racist incidents. They have been treated differently at borders because of their skin. UNACCEPTABLE. — Dr. Ayoade Alakija (@yodifiji) February 25, 2022 According to the country's Ministry of Education and Science, about 80,000 international students study in Ukraine. Sky News reported that 16,000 of those students come from three countries. It's very upsetting to hear that these students have to deal with the fear of fleeing a war as well as the discrimination and racial prejudice that we have to deal with every day. Reports that Black people are being treated differently as they try to leave the country has caused criticism. The UN condemned instances of racist behavior. The Ukraine ambassador to the United Kingdom suggested segregating foreigners from Ukrainians who are trying to flee the country.
