Klay Thompson walked down the hall from the court to the Golden State Warriors locker room to the sound of fans clapping their hands.
Thompson high-fived a few of the people along the way as he said that it felt good. As he entered the locker room, he could hear a lot of noise coming from the door.
Thompson had his best game in over two years, putting up a season-high 38 points on 15-of-24 shooting, including eight 3-pointers, six assists, and six boards in the Warriors' 122-109 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
Thompson hadn't played this kind of game since March. Thompson had his best game in the past two weeks.
Thompson missed two games with a general illness and two more with a back-to-back, but he still averaged 34% shooting from the field and 23.3% from 3.
Thompson said that he was not happy with how he was shooting but that he knew the nights were within him. I know. I have done many great things that players haven't done before.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said it was a relief. Two nights prior to Thompson's scoring spree, Kerr noted that he thought Thompson was forcing shots. Thompson agreed.
Kerr said that he was so hard on himself that he wanted so badly to succeed. He did not hunt shots. Over the past few games, he has been taking tough ones early, which has kept him from getting into a rhythm. It felt like he was taking better shots. The tougher ones get a lot easier for Klay once a couple go in.
Thompson went 8-for-12 on catch-and-shoot scenarios, where he says he is at his best. He went 11-of-18 on his shots for 27 points.
The show Thompson put on was a good example of what the Warriors were all about.
The team shot 48.4% from the floor and 40% from 3. The team's high shooting numbers were due to improved shot selection and decision-making.
Kerr wanted to see this area improved more before Draymond Green came back from his injury. Kerr said that Green's presence couldn't change automatically. Golden State's active players had to figure it out on their own.
Kerr said before the game that Stephen Curry has been handling more typical point guard duties than ever before. Curry was only able to do one thing against the Bucks, which was throw double- and triple-teams at him.
He scored eight points on 3-of-7 shooting and finished with eight assists. He has taken less than 10 field goal attempts since April 9, when he left the game after 10 minutes.
It will be difficult to defend if they commit two to Stephen and Jordan.
The man finished the night with 30 points. Andrew added 21.
Thompson said that he doesn't think a player sees as many triple- and double-teams as he does. He takes the gravity when he is on the floor. It allows so many great looks for the other guys, which would be anyone but Steph.
The focus on Curry gave Thompson the chance to break out of his slump and the Warriors were in a good position to welcome Green back Monday.
Thompson said that he was eager for a night like this. I wanted 40 points. Thirty-eight is good, but 40 is better. Whatever. It was fun at the office.
