  • The war in Ukraine will cause the Fed to be cautious with rate hikes, according to Mark Mobius.

  • The co- founder of Mobius Capital Partners thinks the US will avoid a recession.

  • The Federal Open Market Committee will meet on March 15 and 16.

The Federal Reserve will increase interest rates at a cautious pace in light of Russia's war against Ukraine, billionaire investor Mark Mobius said on Friday, and he expects the world's largest economy to avoid a recession.

The Fed is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points as part of a series of hikes to combat high inflation. The federal funds rate can be found at a range of zero to 0.25% during the two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee.

The co- founder of Mobius Capital Partners said in a televised interview from Singapore that he thinks the Fed is going to be more cautious in this environment.

After the Fed signaled it would work to bring down high inflation, investors began pricing in many rate hikes in 2022. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said consumer price inflation in the US rose to a 40-year high in February.

Expectations for a rate hike of 50 basis points at the March meeting were abandoned due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. There are still expectations for a big rate hike. ING said in a note Friday that markets were positioned for rate increases of 160 basis points this year.

The risk of the US entering a recession is as high as 35%, according to Goldman, as a surge in commodity prices will hurt consumer spending. The world's largest economy will not shrink, according to Mobius.

He said that a ramp-up in the production of military goods in the US would help the economy. Generally speaking, the interest-rate rise is factored into the market. I think the US will do well in this environment, and I think that that is not going to be a big problem for the US.

He said that the eurozone economy is likely to be in a recession.

In an uncertain environment for markets and the global economy, cash is king, but Mobius said he wouldn't hold more than 15% of his portfolio in cash.

He said that now is the time to be stock-picking and looking at good stocks that have gone down a lot for no good reason.
