Alabama residents will no longer be required to hold a permit to conceal and carry a handgun after Gov. Kay Ivey signed a bill into law.

The bill, which was passed along party lines with major Republican support and Democrat opposition, takes effect in January of next year, according to a press release from the governor's office.

She defended her state's Second Amendment rights.

Unlike most states who are trying to make it harder for law-abiding citizens, Alabama is standing up for its Second Amendment rights.

Alabama is the 22nd state to not require a permit to carry a firearm. Arkansas, Iowa, Montana, Tennessee, Texas and Utah passed bills last year that bypassed the permit process for some firearms.

Georgia's state House and Senate passed a bill this week not requiring a permit to carry a handgun, a measure that is expected to be signed into law by the governor.

The requirement for a person to obtain a concealed carry permit to carry a pistol in Alabama has been eliminated by the new law.

The Alabama Sheriff's Association spoke against the bill.

During a protest against the bill earlier this year, Edward Delmore, a police chief in the community of Gulf Shore, said that it didn't comply with common sense.

He said that no one up here is anti-Second Amendment.

The National Rifle Association supported the measure and said that Alabamians are safer for it.

It had the support of some former law enforcement officials in the state congress.
