In front of his home city crowd, Leigh Wood produced a stunning comeback win to halt Michael Conlan with a brutal knockout in the 12th round.

Conlan fell backward through the ropes and off the ring apron after Wood secured the victory in the final round.

A spokesman for Matchroom, which promoted the fight, said that Conlan was conscious and in stable condition after being treated by medics at ringside.

It was another late, dramatic win for Wood after he produced an upset to stop China's Xu Can in the final round of his first world title fight. Wood was knocked down in the first round, but rebounded to floor Conlan in the 11th and then knocked him down again in the 12th.

Wood said he hit him with everything, but he was so tough. It was a bad knockout.

Eddie Hearn was a matchroom promoter.

We should be celebrating one of the best knockouts I have ever seen, but our thoughts are with Michael.

In the opening round, Conlan controlled the fight and almost took the title. It was a great shot from Conlan, who had Wood in trouble early in the second round as he continually found Wood with his left hooks. Conlan, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, began the third carefully, before staggering Wood with a right hand in the last minute of the round. Wood fought back in the fourth round, attacking with punches.

Wood was aggressive in Rounds 5 and 6 but the challenger had better punches. In the sixth, Conlan hit Wood with a crunching right hook to the chin that the champion did well to ignore.

In the eighth, Wood put Conlan under a lot of pressure, and he showed a lot of heart. In the 10th round, Wood was very active and gave Conlan a hard time.

Wood was getting tagged in the 11th but he found the strength and courage to land a left hook that sent Conlan to the canvas. Conlan was given a count at the end of the 11th but he was still complaining about the slip, which inspired Wood to come back in the final round.

At the start of the 12th, Wood launched a ferocious and relentless attack, which left Conlan out on his feet, before the Irishman collapsed through the ropes, falling backward out of the ring.
