A Texas lawmaker is extremely concerned about the situation with the basketball player, who has been held in Russia for three weeks without official government access to her.

Colin Allred spoke with CNN after it was revealed that the basketball star was arrested with cannabis in Russia and is currently being held. The Washington Post notes that Allred is a former athlete who played for the Bears. He says he has been working with the State Department to get her released.

We want to make sure that her rights are respected and that we are able to get access to her, so we don't want her to become a part of this kind of political battle.

Allred told CNN that she is okay because her Russian lawyer has been in contact with her agent and family.

Allred told The Washington Post that the request for consular access was not granted.

Russian state media this week shared her alleged mugshot, but it is not clear where she is being held. John Garamendi told CNN that getting her out of Russia will be difficult because of the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to the Post, Allred said he wouldn't be surprised if this is another example of Russia bringing trumped up charges against an American.
