Scorecard

England had to settle for a draw in the first Test against the West Indies despite a spirited performance on the final day.

The chance to win was given by a declaration from captain Joe Root, who reached his 24th Test hundred in the morning session.

His side took four of the eight runs they took either side of tea to boost their hopes.

The West Indies, who did not attempt to chase their target of 286 in 71 overs, were steadyed by a stubborn, unbroken stand of 80 between Nkrumah Bonner and all-rounders, which lasted 35.5 overs.

England didn't review an appeal against Holder with 22 overs left. He would have been dismissed if they had done that.

The players shook hands with the score of 147-4 after he ended 37 not out and Bonner ended 38.

Mark Wood is a doubt for the second Test because of an elbow injury, which is a blow to England.

England added 132 to their second-innings total before declaring at 349-6 before lunch.

Dan Lawrence scored 37 from 36 balls as England sought quick runs, while Joe Root turned his 84 not out overnight into109.

The first of three Tests may have ended in a draw but England's improved performance on the final two days gives them some confidence as they look to move on from their humiliating loss to Australia.

Pitch thwarts spirited England

Joe Root and Nkrumah Bonner
England's last Test victory came against India in August

England did everything they could to win the game on the final day, even if it was not what they wanted.

The tourists were stymied by a docile pitch, despite the fact that slow left-armer Leach was bowling well.

After West Indies reached 59-0, Ben Stokes removed Brathwaite with a ball that scuttled low, but there was little damage to the pitch after that.

The extra pace was missed and the seamers were not effective.

John Campbell tried to hit the ball over the top but was caught at mid-on and Jermaine Blackwood was out LBW.

Even with fielders surrounding the bat, they were able to defend with relative ease.

England would have had a chance had they reviewed the decision against Holder, but they were wary after burning two reviews of optimistic lbw shouts. The leg stump was suggested to have been hit by the delivery.

The cause was lost when there were only five balls left.

Positives for England

England were aggressive from the start and opener Zak Crawley was the first to go, trying to hit a yorker for 121.

The England captain continued to complete one of his most straightforward Test centuries despite the end of a stand of over 200.

He overtook Cook in the list of most Test tons as England captain with a chanceless knock, and will silence any debate about his return to number three in the batting order.

Lawrence gave England a boost with his brief outing. After being recalled to the side for this Test, the 24-year-old cracked the ball over the off side for a six.

Joe Root
Root's hundred was his 13th as England Test captain

After a run of 14 Tests without a win, this series has been billed as a new era for England.

The performances of Lawrence, Leach, Crawley and Bairstow are positives.

There is still a lot of concern about the overseas ability of Woakes and the threat he poses to the bowling attack.

England must hope that doesn't happen.

'I can't fault anyone today' - reaction

England captain Joe Root said he was proud of the team throughout the week.

We found ourselves in a tricky position on the first day, and to get ourselves back in the game was very pleasing. We got better and better throughout the game.

I can't fault anyone for their efforts today.

The player of the match was Nkrumah Bonner.

I think we showed a lot of character this morning.

We have a lot of positives to take from this game.

England tried all they could to get a result. It was always difficult without Wood, but it took a lot of people by surprise.

The fact that three people scored centuries is a boost to a team desperate to move into more positive territory.

There was more of a spring in the step of the fielders, and there were signs of the collective responsibility that Root is trying to establish.
