  • We thought about how we would spend our golden years when we became adults.

  • We decided to travel full time and sell all of our possessions on the cruise.

  • Here is what it is like to travel outside the US as a parent and grandparent.

My wife and I boarded a cruise ship for her birthday. We didn't know how that trip would change our lives.

As we sat in our cabin enjoying the ocean breezes and talking about the next phase of our lives as empty nesters, we decided we wanted new experiences, more exploration, and to go all-in on travel.

We decided to sell everything and travel full time during the global Pandemic.

We sold our home in a beautiful neighborhood in Florida, our car, and all of our material possessions over the course of two months. We did not store our things or downsize to a smaller place. We lived an entirely location-independent life by selling or donating everything. The adventures began.

Entering the empty-nest stage

My wife and I have a large family. All of our children have graduated from high school, four are in college, and our oldest is married with two children.

This could be a time when a parent downsizes but stays close to their family.

Despite having had a lifetime of raising children, I still felt like I couldn't make significant changes because I always had to be there for my kids.

We put our ambitions on hold there. We wrestled with the idea that we would abandon our children and grandchildren if we traveled.

We decided that we could have the best of both worlds. While still being there for our children, we could travel full time. No rule says you have to stay put to be a good parent, and we deserve to explore fully living our dream life.

We have been in Puerto Rico for six weeks since selling our home. We traveled between Florida, Wisconsin, Atlanta, and New York.

We spent a month in the Italian countryside after ringing in the New Year in Rome. We are in Lisbon. We will travel to at least eight other countries after Portugal.

Affording this lifestyle

As business owners, we were able to afford this lifestyle.

We own several six-figure education businesses and I write for them. We have a business that can be run anywhere with an internet connection.

We share our knowledge and monetize our experiences through digital information products and online courses.

We have options to make money in ways that were unavailable in the past, and we are adding more of these opportunities to our business.

Fully living as empty nesters

We were able to let go of expectations. We learned that we had earned this moment and that we should put ourselves first.

An alternative lifestyle for empty nesters allows us to explore, build wealth, and do things we have always dreamed about.

I am not sure if we will ever settle down again. We have traveled to 25 countries over the past four years, but we still have more to do.

Traveling outside the United States as empty nesters gave us a lifestyle that was filled with new experiences: eating foreign and delicious food, experiencing histories where they happened, learning how to live in different cultures, and living life in a bucket.
