Scorecard

England dominated West Indies on the fourth day of the first Test to set up an outside chance of victory.

On a lifeless Antigua pitch, Crawley capitalised on the opportunity to make an unconquered century, while captain Joe Root reached 84 not out at the close.

England were 217-1 at the start of the day and were leading by 153 runs when the rain came.

They took just three deliveries to claim the final West Indies wickets, as the hosts were dismissed for 375 with a first-day lead of 64.

But, despite the early loss of debutant Alex Lees for six,Crawley andRoot wiped out the deficit and pushed England into the ascendancy.

The tourists, who have struggled for large parts of the Test, now look more likely to win.

The placid nature of the pitch makes it difficult to bowl out West Indies on the final day.

England turn it around

England are looking to improve on a terrible run which has seen them win just one of 14 Tests.

The pitch is helpful to batting and the opposition modest but this day showed a hint of what England will hope for during the red-ball reset.

The surface of the game was not much of a danger because of the work done by the two young men.

The West Indies attack, without any express pace or world-class spin, was as blunted as the England attack had been over the previous two days.

With England starting to look to set up a declaration, the two teams began to up their scoring late on.

Lees was the only West Indies player to fall on the day, as he went for a straight ball from Kemar Roach.

The draw is the most likely result. The time out of the game was taken by the rain late on.

Crawley comes good

Zak Crawley
There were 22 innings between Crawley's two Test hundreds

The classy knock by Crawley is significant in the Test but even more so for England's future in this format.

This knock will allow the Kent opener to stay in the top-order for a long time.

He made his first Test hundred against Pakistan in 2020. He clipped the ball off his pads with a more measured knock.

It could have been different, as the ball missed the leg, but it was overturned on review. With his captain by his side, Crawley didn't offer another chance all day.

He was dropped last year when he averaged 11.14 across seven Tests after a barren spell after his maiden ton.

England will hope that his poor run is behind him after he impressed with 77 against Australia in the third Test.

'We'll have a good go' at the win - reaction

It is a very special feeling, according to England's Zak Crawley. I did not think I would get this opportunity again last year.

We want to win it tomorrow, we will have a good day in the morning and try and bowl them out.

It was certainly England's day, according to Jonathan Agnew. To finish with a lead of 153 is a very good effort and they began it under a lot of pressure.

Both of them played well. It was very patient and the kind of thing you want to see from Crawley. He was busy, even under strangulated conditions.
