  • SkyWest Airlines gave a 90-day notice to the Department of Transportation that it is leaving 29 airports.

  • The airports are part of the federal Essential Air Service program.

  • The DOT could force SkyWest to stay until a replacement airline is found.

SkyWest Airlines wrote to the Department of Transportation on Thursday stating that it would be cutting service to 29 US cities due to a shortage of pilots.

SkyWest expects to stop service in several markets this summer due to an ongoing pilot staffing imbalance.

The affected routes are operated by United Express. As many as 5,000 pilots will be trained by United's own flight school this decade, the company told Insider.

SkyWest also operates flights for Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines.

Routes to regional airports have been affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Pilot shortages, staffing issues, and high fuel costs are some of the factors that have forced airlines to drop unprofitable markets.

Henry Harteveldt, travel analyst and president of Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider that carriers don't have a civic responsibility to serve unprofitable markets and will cut cities that don't give them an advantage.

In November, United announced it would be dropping 11 small cities, with Delta cutting three airports a month later. United CEO Scott Kirby said that the airline had to ground 100 of its regional jets because of a pilot shortage.

The airports being dropped by SkyWest are part of the federal Essential Air Service program, which was enacted after the airline industry was deregulated in 1978. Small communities don't lose their air link to the rest of the country if the airlines are paid a stipend to fly from certain regional markets to larger hubs.

SkyWest has announced that more than a quarter of the airports on the EAS list may temporarily lose commercial air service. The Department of Transportation can require the carrier to operate until a replacement is found.

SkyWest told the DOT in January that it would be leaving Ogdensburg International Airport and Plattsburgh International Airport in New York by mid-April due to staffing-related challenges.

The agency placed a hold-in-order on SkyWest to prevent them from ending service to the cities until a new airline is found. The decision came after Senator Charles Schumer of New York sent a letter to the agency to temporarily maintain service.

SkyWest will continue to operate their flights until a new carrier is found, according to a press release from Fort Dodge Regional Airport.
