DeMarcus Lawrence may not be leaving the Dallas Cowboys this summer.
A source told Ed Werder that Lawrence isn't going anywhere, but he is due to count for $27 million against the salary cap.
The Cowboys are over the cap and there are some difficult decisions to be made in Dallas. The team will want enough wiggle room to pursue outside free agents and sign its draft picks, since Michael Gallup,Connor Williams and Randy Gregory are free agents.
With Lawrence due to collect $22 million, the future of Cooper is in question.
Lawrence would saddle the Cowboys with $19 million in dead money and save them $8 million. It would save $19 million for the upcoming year if he were designated as a post-June 1 release.
Dallas needs to consider the financial benefits against its quest for a title.
When he was healthy, Lawrence finished with 21 tackles, three sacks and two forced turnovers.
It would be difficult for the Cowboys to find a replacement for Lawrence because of their finances. Re-signing Gregory isn't easy.
Matt Lombardo @MattLombardoNFLAfter the #Cowboys declined to use the franchise tag on Randy Gregory, I’m told per sources, the pass-rusher’s market is heating up with several teams showing strong interest.
Gregory matched a career-high six sacks in 12 games last season. #NFL
The dilemma for Jerry Jones and the front office is that Lawrence's return would likely mean having to cut costs elsewhere.
