The appearance of your smile can be changed with gum contouring. The procedure, which is carried out at most dentists' offices, involves the use of lasers or scalpels. Excess gum tissue is painlessly removed to expose more tooth structure. The results are immediate and dentists don't see long-term effects. Receding gum tissue can be corrected with gum contouring.

  • One of her children threw up blood and she got an HHT diagnosis.

  • Kate and two of her daughters have a rare disease.

Kate James, a 39-year-old mother of three in the UK, suffered from daily nosebleeds until she was given a diagnosis she never expected. James was diagnosed with a hereditary telangiectasia, a disorder in which some blood vessels form without capillaries, after 30 years of nosebleeds. The most common side effect is nosebleeds.

James said that his parents noticed the nosebleeds when he was young. James had cotton wool stuck in her nose to stop the bleeding if she ran around during gym class or climbed stairs.

James decided to investigate why she and two of her children had recurrent nosebleeds after one of her children started throwing up blood. She is on a mission to raise awareness of HHT, which is estimated to occur in 1 in 5,000 people.

It runs in her family

She thought her dad had nosebleeds because he always had them.

James said that when she got married to her first husband in 2004, all she was concerned about was not bleeding on her wedding dress.

James had three children, two of whom had frequent nosebleeds, and a new partner. The daughter of James started complaining about headaches. James tried to find the source of the problem. She made sure her daughter drank enough liquids and had her eyes looked at.

James said that she threw up blood clot like he had never seen before.

James took her daughter to the hospital, where doctors tried to figure out what was wrong. Calum Semple, a consultant in respiratory medicine at the hospital, noticed red spots on James' hands when he visited the family.

James had a diagnosis after decades of nosebleeds.

What is HHT?

People with HHT are more likely to suffer strokes, brain infections, heart failure, and bleeding problems later in life.

A cluster of veins that hadn't formed correctly in her lung caused a massive bleed. James said that she would likely have collapsed if she had not been getting enough oxygen.

James, her older brother, her father, and two of her children were all diagnosed with HHT.

James hasn't stopped his nosebleeds even after a diagnosis.

James had one of the worst nosebleeds she had ever had on Christmas Eve.

She said that the children were with their dad and that she was at her boyfriend's house.

The disease is poorly understood because it is so rare. More research is needed. In medical school, the name of the disease was only mentioned once in an early lecture about blood-vessel development.

As James imagined her future with HHT, she did not worry about her own condition, but about her daughters who also have the disorder.

Unlike James, her daughters would have access to genetic selection so that they wouldn't pass the genes to their own children.
