  • Democrats want to give Americans quarterly checks to pay for big oil profits.

  • The bigger thing is that it will save everyone money.

  • The proposal faces a steep odds of passing.

Democrats introduced a bill on Thursday to tax the largest oil companies and use the money to give quarterly checks to Americans.

Smaller companies would not be affected by the legislation because it only applies to large firms like ExxonMobil. The tax would be imposed on the difference between the current price of a barrel and the average price between 2015 and 2019.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ro Khanna of California and Sen. Whitehouse of Rhode Island. Other co-sponsors include Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, and Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio.

The plan would provide direct payments to Americans who are struggling with rising prices. The income thresholds were the same as last year, with tax filers making under $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples receiving the payments. Joint-filers would get $360 a year, while single-filers would get $240 a year.

The bigger thing is that it will save everyone money.

The plan has a long way to go to become law. Republicans are against tax hikes and centrist Democrats may be against them. A representative for Sen. Joe Manchin didn't respond to a request for comment.

One of the world's largest oil producers has been cut out of global markets due to traders shunning Russian oil. Even before the Kremlin began its military campaign, firms like ExxonMobil and Chevron reported their biggest profits in years.

The price of gasoline reached $4.31 per gallon on Thursday. The US is likely to impose a ban on all Russian energy imports to punish Putin.

President Joe Biden said Tuesday that there will be costs in the United States for this step.

Americans are seeing prices go up across the board, not just when they refill their gas tanks. Furniture, chicken, new cars, and steak were some of the items that saw their prices increase compared to a year ago. Insider's Ben Winck and Madison Hoff reported that inflation accelerated to its fastest pace in four decades.

Democrats are looking at ways to cut costs for families by establishing affordable daycare and reining in prescription drug costs. The majority of their economic agenda is stuck because of resistance from Republicans and Manchin.

Democrats have floated the idea of suspending the federal gas tax to help out at the pump. It seems unlikely that that can overcome Republican resistance.
