Five Iowa children are facing hate crime charges for harassing another child. The young people used racial slurs while attacking the victim and now they have turned the charge into an enhanced count.

Six children ranging in age from 12 to 13 were spending the night at a Clive home. One was physically and verbally attacked during the sleepover. The five boys threw objects at the victim and used racial epithets.

According to KCCI, the kids who are not public due to Iowa law knew each other because they attended the same school. There was no reason for the child to be targeted and bullied other than the use of racialized language.

The Polk County Attorney's Office and law enforcement were made aware of the incident over the weekend.

The Polk County Attorney's Office charged the pre-teens with hate crime and assault because of their actions. The charges were upgraded after officials considered the racial slurs.

In Iowa, a hate crime can be committed against a person because of their race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, political affiliation, sex, and sexual orientation.

The hate crime charges were given to the juvenile because of their race.

He doesn't think the case will go to adult court because of the severity of the hate crime charges, but he does think it's important to give a lesson to the youth.

It's not acceptable to bully of any kind. We want to prevent that as much as we can before it becomes more severe.
