Women who have abortions have been sentenced to longer prison terms in the country, bucking a recent trend in Latin America.

Some of Latin America's largest countries have expanded abortion access in the past two years, but conservative religious trends still hold sway.

The Protection of Life and Family law was passed by the Congress of Guatemala.

President Alejandro Giammattei said in a speech at the National Palace that the event was an invitation to unite.

The maximum sentence for Guatemalan women convicted of abortion is three years, but now they can be sentenced to up to 10 years. Doctors and others who assist women in ending pregnancies were subject to harsher penalties.

When the life of the mother is at risk, abortion is legal.

Lawmakers backing the legislation said the law was necessary because minority groups in society propose ways of thinking and practices that are incongruous with Christian morality.

The legislation violates human rights, especially of women in rural areas where there isn't a government health infrastructure, according to Vicenta Ger.

The legislation received 101 votes in favor and 8 against. Fifty-one lawmakers weren't present.

Jordan Rodas, the elected human rights prosecutor, said that the world was expanding the rights of women. He said that those who support sexual diversity want to live free of discrimination and stigma.

The approval of this dangerous initiative represents a threat to the rights of women and lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in the country. He said the legislation distracted from the dismantling of the justice system.

Samuel Pérez said it was approved by men unaffected by the issue of abortion.

The Constitutional Court voted to allow abortion until the 24th week of a pregnant woman's life. Prior to the ruling, abortions were only allowed when a woman's life was in danger, a fetus had malformations or the pregnancy resulted from rape.

In September, Mexico's Supreme Court ruled that abortion was not a crime and that it was unconstitutional to punish it.

In January of last year, a law went into effect in Argentina that allowed abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy in cases of rape or risk to the woman's health. It was significant because Pope Francis hails from Argentina.

Same-sex marriage was banned by the legislation and schools were banned from teaching about a child's identity according to their birth gender.

The legislation protects heterosexual people who have no interest in diversity, according to lawmaker Armando Castillo.

The law stigmatizes people, discriminates and foments hate speech and crimes, warned an opposition lawmaker.

  • A bill that would triple jail time for women convicted of receiving an abortion, ban same-sex marriage and prohibit teaching about sexual diversity in schools was passed by the legislature.
