According to a source, the Washington Commanders are expected to release veteran safety Landon Collins in order to create more salary-cap space, but it will cost them a valuable defender.

Collins had three years left on his contract and was scheduled to count $16.2 million against the salary cap this season. His release will save Washington $6 million against the cap, but he will still have $9 million in dead money. Washington tried to work out a deal to lower his cap number, according to a source.

The release of Collins was first reported by the NFL Network.

Collins was used in a hybrid safety/linebacker role by Washington. The Commanders defense improved as a result of that change.

In the first six games, most of which featured Collins as the starting strong safety, Washington's defense ranked 31st in total yards and 32nd in scoring. Washington's defense ranked ninth in points and fourth in yards after Collins took over the hybrid role.

Ron Rivera said that Collins was a great player in that role. Collins made it clear that he preferred to be a full-time safety.

His past two seasons with Washington were disrupted by injuries. He missed four games last season because of injuries, but he tore his Achilles in Week 7 of 2020. He was placed on injured reserve because of a foot injury.

Collins was signed to a six-year contract by Washington.

Collins was selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft by the New York Giants. Collins was a first-team All Pro in 2016 and made three Pro Bowls in New York. He didn't make the Pro Bowl.
